Boy Scouts of America Headquarters

We provided a new 14,000 sf facility for the headquarters of the Smoky Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America for the executive and field staff. The design imagery reflects the values of the boy scouts by respecting the earth with natural materials and deep overhangs to serve as a showplace for the East Tennessee division of the organization. Included in the center is a retail Scout Shop and a 1,500 square-foot board room that will accommodate up to 100 people.

Entry to the building is through the flag court over a memorial Eagle Walk of brick pavers engraved with the names of past Eagle Scouts to a monumental entry canopy reminiscent of a mountain lodge. The entry tower is symbolic of a fire tower keeping watch over the surrounding counties. The entry tower is also the main circulation organizing element. Entrances to the to the main functions: Scout Shop, Board Room, and Executive Offices are on axis from this central point. A bronze statue of the “Lone Scout” and a compass rose floor tile pattern emphasize the axial spatial relationships. Locally quarried stone is used for the grounding base with other materials selected to be low maintenance: brick, stone, and aluminum.
